Introduction Use the Aestiva Array File Manager to manage or program HTML and HTML/OS files, text files, and non-editable files. Files are named as follows:
user:/folder/folder/folder/filename
Directories and files listed in the File Manager are preceded with an image. The image serves two purposes. First, it distinguishes the file type (see The File Key below), and second, when the image is clicked, the file is displayed, or viewed. (Only viewable files use this feature.)
The list of directories and files can be sorted by Name, Size, or Last Modified. To use the sorting feature, click the column header in which to sort. Clicking the header again will reverse the sort order.
The File Key The following types of files are distinguishable by the File Manager and can be set up in the Advanced System Settings > File Types setting in the Control Panel.
- directory - application file - audio file - backup file - calendar file - compressed file - database file - htmlos application file - image file - pdf file - schedule script file - system file - text file - unknown file - video file - web file
Files that launch HTML/OS applications or other Aestiva Array Desktop icons are represented by .
If a directory is not mirrored (located on both the public and private areas of the server), it will be represented by . Any file represented with a in the upper left corner means the file is a public file. Files with a represent a file with networking enabled (shared with a peer).
Example: represents a web file which is public and available to specified network peers.
Files with a after the file name means the file is scrambled.
Working with Directories and Files To view the contents of a file, click on the file name. This will load the file into the editor. The file can then be edited as needed. Click the Save link to save any changes.
To create a new file or directory, click the 'New' link in the Options area. A prompt will appear asking for the new name and whether to create a file or directory. If a name is given without a directory, the new file is saved in the current directory. If a new name is given with a directory, the file manager will assume this is the absolute path. The directory must already exist when creating a new file.
It is always best to be in the same directory in which a new file or directory is being created. This rule holds true anytime a prompt appears asking for a new file/directory name.
To copy or move a file or directory, check the file(s). A prompt will appear asking for the New Location. Enter the appropriate information and click either [Copy] or [Move]. The files will now be copied or moved to the new location.
A single file or directory or multiple files and directories can be moved to the /trash directory. To move a file or directory, check the file(s), and click the Move to Trash link under Options. The files will now be moved to the /trash. To delete all the items located in the /trash directory, navigate to the /trash directory and click the Empty Trash link under Options. All files and directories located in the trash will be permanently removed. Note: This option is only displayed when you are in the /trash directory.
To get information about a directory or file, check the appropriate file or directory. Information about the file or directory will be displayed under Properties.
Uploading and Downloading Files To upload a file, click the Upload link under Options. A prompt will appear asking for the path of the file to upload. Click [Browse...] to locate the file on your computer. To upload a file from another server, enter the entire URL for the file.
Once the file is located, enter the new file name, and click [Upload]. If the new file name is not entered, the file name in the path will be used.
To upload very large files, use the JavaUpload tool located at the bottom of the Upload screen.
To download file(s), check the file(s) to download and click the Download link under Options. A prompt will appear with links to each of these files. Click each link to download the file.
Backing Up Files or Directories Backups can be created for a single file or directory or multiple files and directories. To backup file(s), select the file(s) you'd like to backup and click the Backup link under Options. All files will be copied with a '.bak' file extension and directories will be copied with '_bak' added to the directory name. If a backup already exist for the file or directory, the name of the backup will be incremented by 1. Example: myfile-1.bak and mydi_bak_1
Sharing Files with Peers File(s) on your copy of Aestiva Array can be shared with peer(s) within your network. This will give the peer access to the individual file(s) from their copy of Aestiva Array. To share file(s) with a peer, select the file(s) you'd like to share and click the Share link under Options. A prompt will appear asking for additional information. Select the peer from the pull-down and the level of access the peer should have to the file and click [Save]. The peer will now have access to the file.
Adding Desktop Icons A desktop icon can be added to your copy of Aestiva Array from withing the File Manager. To add an icon, select the HTML file to launch when the icon is clicked and click the Add Desktop Icon link under Options. A prompt will appear asking for additional information. Enter the additional settings and click [Save]. The icon will be added to the appropriate menu of the Aestiva Array Desktop.
Searching Files The File Manager can search through files to locate a file name or locate the keyword within a file. To perform a search, click the Search link under Places. A prompt will appear asking for the keyword and other options. Enter the appropriate information and click [Search]. A list of results will be displayed below.
To view a file's contents from the list of results, click the file name. This will load the file into the editor.
To navigate back to the search results, click the Search link under Places.
The search can be canceled by clicking [Cancel Search], by clicking any of the links under Places (except Search), or by using the current directory path to navigate through the directory tree.
Using Shell Commands In addition to navigating the directory tree with point and click, the Aestiva Array File Manager also supports Shell commands. Just below the file list, is an input box. Shell commands can be entered in this input. See The Shell and Shell Commands for additional information.
